How We Know Jesus Really Rose Again

As we come upon another Easter celebration I wanted to once again share some of the strong historical evidence that Jesus did indeed actually rise from the dead. Christians who believe in the resurrection don’t do so just because that’s what we’ve been told and because it makes us feel better. That need not be the case anyway. There’s solid historical evidence that you can know and share with others. So whether you’re a Christian or someone who thinks that there’s no way Jesus actually rose, let’s take a quick look at the evidence and then if you want to dig deeper you can read some of my earlier posts.

Minimal Facts Approach

tomb

I’m going to be presenting the Minimal Facts Approach developed by Gary Habermas and Michael Licona. This means considering only those facts which are so strongly verified historically that they are accepted by nearly every scholar who studies the subject, even the rather skeptical ones.  This is presenting the case with the “lowest common denominator” of agreed-upon facts.  Sharing the evidence with this approach, someone who doesn’t even accept the Bible as the inspired Word of God can see the strength of this case on the historical evidence alone.

There are five minimal facts, or what Haberman and Licona call 4+1 facts.  This is because the first four are accepted by nearly every scholar and the fifth one is accepted by an impressive majority of scholars, though not by nearly all.

Fact 1 : Jesus Died By Crucifixion

Not only do the four New Testament gospel writers record that Jesus died by crucifixion but so do several non-Christian sources. The highly critical Jesus Seminar scholar, John Dominic Crossan, who doesn’t accept a lot of what the Bible says about Jesus, however acknowledges,  “That he was crucified is as sure as anything historical can ever be.” You can read more about this fact here.

Fact 2 : Jesus’ Disciples Believed that He Rose and Appeared to Them

There is a virtual consensus among scholars who study the resurrection that after Jesus died by crucifixion, his disciples really believed that he rose from the dead and appeared to them.  This is because the evidence shows that the disciples themselves claimed that Jesus had risen and appeared to them, and after they said that, they were radically transformed from fearful cowards who denied and abandoned Jesus to bold and brave men who proclaimed the good news of the risen Jesus. And they did that in spite of the imprisonment, torture and death that that brought. You can read more about this fact here.

Fact 3 : The Church Persecutor Paul was Suddenly Changed

Saul of Tarsus, better known as the Apostle Paul, was a devout Jew who believed it was God’s will for him to persecute and imprison members of the new Christian church.  He was going about doing that when he suddenly changed and became one of the church’s most influential messengers and leaders. Why?  Both Paul himself and Luke report that it was because Paul firmly believed that he had an encounter with the risen Jesus. So the resurrection of Jesus is testified to by both his friends and an enemy.  And this sudden change came at a great cost to Paul. You can read more about this fact here.

Fact 4 : The Skeptic James, the Brother of Jesus, was Suddenly Changed

The gospels report that Jesus had at least four brothers, or rather half-brothers, including James.  Josephus, the Jewish historian also mentions James. So what was James’ opinion of Jesus? What would you think if your brother started claiming to be God? Before the resurrection James didn’t believe in him, he thought he was out of his mind. After the resurrection James was one of the leaders of the early church in Jerusalem. So why the sudden change? The New Testament says that the risen Jesus specifically appeared to James. If your brother died and rose again and appeared to you, that might change your mind too. It seems that’s what happened for James. You can read more about this fact here.

Fact 5 : The Tomb was Empty

This fifth fact doesn’t have as wide an acceptance among scholars as the previous four but still an impressive majority of about 75% accept it.  What’s more there is strong evidence for it. If the tomb wasn’t empty his enemies in the Jewish leadership and Roman government would have only had to exhume the body and display it to bring an end to it all.  But there is total silence from Christianity’s critics who would have jumped at this sort of evidence.  They even indirectly confirm it by coming up with the story that the disciples had stolen Jesus’ body. You can read more about this fact here.

Putting it All Together

Put together, the five minimal facts make a strong historical case. Alternate, opposing theories have been come up with to explain away these facts but while they may account for one or more of the facts, they fail to explain all five put together. You can read more about this here. For me, the explanation that Jesus actually rose from the dead clearly makes the most sense of all the evidence that has been left for us. I don’t just believe it because it’s a nice story and it gives me hope, I believe it because God has given us considerable historical evidence that deserves serious consideration by all of us.

As it did for the disciples, Paul, James, and so many others since, the evidence of the Risen Jesus, who died for my sins, has changed my life, and definitely for the better. My life has never been the same since I came to understand his amazing love and acceptance for me, shown in the cross and the empty tomb. It is my hope that if you have not yet come to know the Risen Jesus personally, that you will. May you find and accept this great gift this Easter.

We Don’t Celebrate Easter Because of the Bible

We Don’t Celebrate Easter Because of the Bible

Why do we celebrate Easter? Why do Christians believe that Jesus rose from the dead? A lot of people might think that it’s just because the Bible says so. That there’s really no other reason to believe it, but the Bible says so and Christians just believe what the Bible says. Therefore, if you don’t think that the Bible is the authoritative source of truth that should be accepted without question, you might not think that there’s much to consider about the historical resurrection of Jesus. Think again.

I’d like to remind us that the Christian church came into existence and began celebrating the resurrection of Jesus from the dead well before the Bible as we know it came to be. There were the Jewish scriptures, the Old Testament, but the church started, based on the belief in the resurrected Jesus, before the New Testament was written. What’s more, the church was already changing the world before the New Testament writings were gathered together.

tombThere isn’t a Christian church that believes in the resurrection because of the Bible. There’s a Bible because eye witnesses to Jesus’ resurrection started the Christian church in the first half of the first century and later wrote the New Testament. The very early church didn’t believe in the resurrection because of the Bible, they wrote the Bible because of the resurrection. The disciples were convinced that they saw the risen Jesus with their own eyes. Their lives were transformed because of that fact and the world was changed because of the testimony they shared and gave their lives for.

I encourage you to check out the evidence for the resurrection here on the blog. You might also want to check out Andy Stanley’s message here.

I want to wish you a Happy Easter because I believe that Jesus really rose from the dead and we have great hope in him!

Do You See The Resurrection Like The Easter Bunny?

Do You See The Resurrection Like The Easter Bunny?

With Easter being tomorrow, is the way you see the resurrection of Jesus like the way you see the Easter Bunny? The Easter Bunny is a nice idea meant to give those who don’t know any better something to look forward to and to be happy about. As we grow older we come to see that this couldn’t be real. (Santa Claus at least seems more believable to me now, at least he’s a man not a bunny who does this!) We come to see that the Easter Bunny was made up, with good intentions to be sure, but made up nonetheless.  So what about the resurrection? Is that really any different?

4-5 resurrection investigate

Historical Reality or a Made-Up Nice Idea?

At this point in your life how do you really view the resurrection of Jesus? Is it a historical reality or just a nice idea that was made up, with good intentions likely, to give those who don’t really know better something to look forward to and be happy about?

Like we did with the Easter Bunny when we didn’t know better, did some people in the past believe something when they didn’t know better, that we today, with all that we’ve learned scientifically, can no longer believe to be real? Could a man rising from the dead be real to an intelligent person today?

I think a lot of people might wonder that today and some have already decided that it isn’t really believable. Sure it might give some hope to those who don’t know better, but it isn’t real.

Challenging Some Assumptions

We might be tempted to think that the people in the ancient past who believed and passed on the idea of the resurrection were kind of like us as children believing in the Easter Bunny. They didn’t know any better. Without having learned the things we’ve since learned, they were more gullible. We might think that it was easy for them to believe that Jesus rose from the dead. They were just told it and believed it without even questioning it.

But were they really like that? Were they so gullible and easily swayed? I say that they were not. Yes, we’ve learned some things about how things really work but they were no less intelligent people than we are. It’s a bit arrogant for us to believe that they were so gullible. Even Jesus’ inner-most circle of disciples didn’t believe it easily at all.

Even 2000 years ago people didn’t believe that people could just rise from the dead. Before going to the cross Jesus repeatedly told them that he was going to die and rise again. But did they believe it? No, this went in one ear and out the other. When he was crucified they were disillusioned. This man they had followed and thought was the Messiah was dead and gone. They didn’t wait expectantly by the tomb, waiting for his resurrection like he had told them. No, they fearfully went into hiding, wondering what they were going to do with their lives now.

The women went to the tomb on Sunday morning, not expecting to see Jesus risen, but to prepare his body for it’s final resting there in the tomb. But they found the stone rolled aside and Jesus’ body was gone. They were told that he had risen just as he said. So the women ran back to tell the disciples the news.

And did the disciples just easily accept this, after all it’s what Jesus had said would happen? No. Luke 24:11 says, “But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense.” Do you still think they were gullible? Some of us today might believe it easier than they did, having seen Jesus do miracles and having told them this is what would happen.

Many Convincing Proofs

Thankfully God knows that we can find things hard to believe, whether thousands of years ago or today. Jesus knew this. He knew that people don’t just easily believe that someone rose from the dead. And while he would have been pleased if they had just taken him at his word, he provided the evidence that they needed to be able to believe.

He appeared to them and let them examine the nail holes in his hands and feet and where the spear had been thrust into his side. He ate food with them. He walked with them. And it didn’t just take one appearance to convince them. You may not realize this but he spent forty days with them convincing them.

Acts 1:3 says, “After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.

They didn’t believe easily. They wouldn’t find the Easter Bunny to be any more believable than you or I do, and they wouldn’t have found the resurrection to be any more believable than people today would, except, Jesus appeared to them and presented evidence that their intelligent minds could no longer deny.

And because they were so convinced in this way, their lives could never be the same again. God had entered the world in Jesus Christ. He had died n the cross for their sins and for ours, and he had risen from the dead! And so they went from hiding, cowering in fear, to going out and boldly telling everyone what had happened, because how could you keep news like this to yourself?!

The Evidence is There for Us Today

Jesus doesn’t appear to you and I today to convince us, but the historical evidence is there for us to explore. I encourage you to read a series of posts I presented on this evidence a couple of years go.  There are five minimal facts of the resurrection that almost all scholars accept, even the skeptical ones. 1) Jesus Died By Crucifixion, 2) Jesus’ Disciples Believed that He Rose and Appeared to Them, 3) The Church Persecutor Paul was Suddenly Changed, 4) The Skeptic James, the Brother of Jesus, was Suddenly Changed, and 5) The Tomb was Empty.

Put together these facts of evidence present a case that I cannot deny. I believe that no other explanation can explain the facts other than that Jesus Christ did indeed rise from the dead.  See what you think.

Happy Easter! He is Risen! He is Risen, Indeed!

Reflections on the Risen Movie

Reflections on the Risen Movie

Last week I saw Risen. If you haven’t heard of it, it’s a movie about the resurrection of Jesus told from a unique perspective, that of an unbelieving Roman military tribune. As the trailer says, it’s the most important event in human history seen through the eyes of a non-believer. This unique take may help some people to look at it through fresh eyes of their own. I myself would say that this perspective was interesting and thought provoking.  It’s a good movie and I enjoyed it. I do encourage you to see it and to think about inviting a friend.

CSI: Jerusalem

You could also say that it’s the resurrection story told as a detective story, something that’s quite popular today. The events portrayed from the Roman perspective make sense. Jealous of Jesus, the Jewish leadership pushes the Roman governor to put him to death, claiming he is a revolutionary that’s a threat to Caesar. His body is placed in a tomb and put under Roman guard. But then three days later the body is gone and people are starting to say that he’s risen from the dead. For both the Jewish and Roman leaders this is worse than when Jesus was alive. Both wanted to put an end to this right away.

The Jewish leaders make up the story that the disciples came in the night and stole the body while the Roman guards were sleeping. Not a likely story as Roman guards who slept on duty could be put to death. But what happened to the body? If they could just produce the body of Jesus that could put an end to it all. And so Roman Tribune Clavius, portrayed by Joseph Fiennes, is tasked with investigating what happened to Jesus’ body.  Assisted by his aide Lucius (Tom Felton from the Harry Potter movies), Clavius searches the tomb for clues and questions witnesses and the guards in an all out search for the body.

Coming to Grips with the Evidence

Through his investigation, this unbelieving Roman must try to make sense of what he’s uncovered. He has to try to reconcile what he’s seen and heard with what he has believed to be true about life and the world. This movie is good in that it reminds or makes people aware that Christianity isn’t about some rules that we’re supposed to follow. It isn’t about nice sayings and stories that have an inspiring meaning but that really couldn’t have happened. Rather it’s based on a historical event that can be and was investigated.

An open-minded  investigation of the historical evidence of the resurrection of Jesus forces an intellectually honest person to come to grips with the evidence. In his love for us in his amazing plan to save us, I believe that it was God’s intention to to cause all of us to do what Clavius has to do, to reconcile the risen Jesus with what we believe to be true about life and the world. It’s easy to blow off a storybook Jesus if you want, but what do you do with a man who died on a cross and really rose again from the dead? That’s not someone you can just blow off. You must make a choice about him. You must either accept him or reject him.

Thankfully this one we must come to grips with loves us more than anyone else and only wants the best for us. Yes, he forces us to make a decision about him but it’s only because he loves us and longs for us to come to know and love him as he knows and loves us.

Some Concluding Thoughts

If you have haven’t yet come to grips with who Jesus is, know that I’m praying for you. I pray that you will investigate this for yourself. Open a Bible. Read the New Testament and see Jesus for who he is.  See what he does and says and see what he does for you in dying on the cross. Then investigate the resurrection and see what you think of the historical evidence. I would be happy to hear what you think.

And then for those of us who know Jesus and wish to share him with others, if coming to grips with the evidence of the resurrection of Jesus was so key to God’s plan for the spread of Christianity, why is it that often today it seems to be an afterthought at best? Yes it’s important to share our stories about how Jesus has changed out lives but let’s also be sure to gently and respectfully help them to confront the evidence of the one who “was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord“.(Romans 1:4).

Is the Virgin Birth Believable?

Is the Virgin Birth Believable?

Is it possible in today’s age to believe that the virgin birth of Jesus Christ actually happened? Is it scientifically possible? Many have reason to be skeptical of such things, as we just don’t see things like this happening every day. While  I don’t have any evidence to present that specifically supports the virgin birth, because of much of the other evidence  I have been presenting here on the blog, I find the virgin birth very believable.

Design

The Evidence of Creation Makes it Easy for Me to Believe

As I have presented in many posts, I believe that there has to be a satisfying reason why the universe, in it’s amazing complexity, exists. The evidence strongly favors the idea that there was a beginning to the universe, meaning there was a time when there was nothing, and then the universe (time, space and matter) came into existence. This had to have a cause. What’s more, this cause had to be outside of time, space and matter and it had to have the power to bring the universe into existence. It, or he, also had to have the intelligence to design the universe in the way that would make life in it possible. As I have presented before, there is a slim set of possible conditions that all have to be met for life to be possible.

And then, as if that wasn’t enough to show the need for a creator, this creator also had to be able to bring life into existence from non-life. Everything we know from science tells us that life does not just spontaneously generate from non-life. What’s more, reason tells us that the amount of information in DNA, the instructions for the building of all living things, could not have come about from a non-intelligent source. The evidence is clear to me that there was a designer and creator of life.

Resurrection

The Evidence of the Resurrection Makes it Easy for Me to Believe

As I have also presented in many posts, the evidence is strong that Jesus Christ actually died by crucifixion, was buried, and rose again from the dead. This idea isn’t just wishful thinking, a nice myth that makes us feel better and more hopeful. When you examine the historical evidence with an open mind, it presents a very strong case. To me it’s a convincing case. The alternative theories fail to account for the five minimal facts of the resurrection. If the evidence was just that the tomb was empty, for example, the theory that his body was stolen might be satisfying. But that’s not the sole piece of evidence. You also have to explain why the disciples clearly believed that they had witnessed the risen Jesus, and gave their lives defending that belief. You also have to explain why an enemy and a skeptic also came to believe in the risen Jesus, and give their lives for their new found belief.

Dead men don’t often come back to life, but a God who can bring life out of non-life can certainly handle bringing a human body back to life.

The God of Miraculous Life

If God can bring life into existence from nothing and bring a dead human body back to life, then why should we find it difficult to believe that he could bring about a virgin birth? Just as God brought hope to the world through the miraculous child who has been born for us, he can bring new life to you when life seems hopeless. He came for you. God loves you so much that, even though we have all turned out backs on him and thought we could do life just fine without him, he sent his only Son to come for us. Jesus is God and he was born miraculously all so that he could give his life for you and I. Jesus died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins so that we can be forgiven and enjoy life as God intended it, in relationship with him. And then after he died for us, he rose again from the dead and forever lives as the bridge between God and man.

That’s what we celebrate at Christmas. It’s my prayer for you that, if you haven’t yet, you will receive God’s Christmas gift to you, the gift of new life in Christ. Tell him that you believe and that you want to be forgiven and know him, both now and for eternity.  Merry Christmas to All!

He is Risen! He is Risen Indeed!

He is Risen!  He is Risen Indeed!

After looking at the evidence for Jesus’ resurrection I believe that the traditional Easter greeting is appropriate.  On Easter one person says, “He is risen!” and the other responds “He is risen indeed!”.  I believe that response is more than just a statement of faith on the part of that person, I believe that it’s the best explanation of all the facts we’ve looked at surrounding the claim of Jesus’ resurrection.

4-5 resurrection investigate

Opposing Theories

Ever since the first time the resurrection of Jesus was proclaimed, opposing theories have been put together to explain away the resurrection.  Rejecting the supernatural, alternate ways have been posed to explain the facts by natural means.  But any theory, for or against, has to account for all five minimal facts I have presented the past five weeks.

The first opposing theory given was that the disciples stole the body.  This accounts for the empty tomb but doesn’t account for the disciples actions which show that they really believed he rose and appeared to them and they were willing to die for that belief.  Nor does it explain the sudden change in Paul and James, which they said was because the risen Jesus appeared to them.

Others have said they were just hallucinating when the disciples thought they saw Jesus but groups of people don’t share hallucinations.  Plus, while they might have been in the frame of mind, in their grief, to hallucinate seeing him, Paul and James wouldn’t have been in that same frame of mind.  What’s more this doesn’t account for the empty tomb.

When Natural Explanations Don’t Work, Consider the Supernatural

empty tomb (1)Of course we should always start by looking for natural explanations, but when none are found and the evidence is strong that something actually happened, we should be open to considering the supernatural.  This is certainly true when a supernatural explanation is at home.  Jesus lived a sinless life and was an amazing moral teacher.  He claimed to be God and to be the way to God the Father.  He told people to trust in him for their eternal salvation.  What’s more he backed up those claims with his miracles and he said that when he was killed he’d rise from the dead.  After that he was crucified and then appeared to and convinced friends and foes alike that he had indeed risen.  If someone claimed that John F. Kennedy rose from the dead that would be out of place, but with Jesus such a claim is right at home.

But Why?

Jesus’ death and resurrection makes even more sense when you understand the purpose.  The Bible says, and most of us would admit, that we’ve sinned against God.  Romans 3:23 says, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,”.  Jesus said that’s why he came.  He said he came “to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mt 20:28, Mk 10:45)  Jesus came to give his life for us to pay the penalty for our sins.  Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”   Jesus can offer us eternal life because he died in our place to pay the death penalty for our sins.

Why would Jesus do this for us?  John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”  God is the one we’ve sinned against but he loves us so much that he was willing to become a man and come here so that he could pay for our sins himself.  This way he can be just, seeing that the penalty for sin is paid, and we can be forgiven.  Jesus’ resurrection from the dead shows that the price for our sins has been paid in full.

Jesus Has Done This for You – Have You Accepted His Gift?

In his great love Jesus endured a horrible death for you on the cross.  He is God, though, as he claimed, and the grave couldn’t hold him.  He rose again from the dead, victorious over sin and death.  Now he offers you forgiveness and eternal life with him.  You can be made right with God and have a personal relationship with him through Jesus.  But that’s not automatic.  He doesn’t force himself on anyone.  You have a choice to make.  John 1:12 says, “to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.”

Have you believed in and accepted the risen Jesus as your savior?  If not and you want to, just pray and thank Jesus for what he’s done for you.  Tell him you believe that he is who he said and that you believe that he died and rose again.  Ask him to forgive you of your sins and tell him you want to have a personal relationship with him, getting to know the one who loves you more than any other.

If you do that sincerely you can be sure that you have eternal life.  1 John 5:13 says, “I have written this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal life.”  What’s more you can be sure that he will come into your life and help you to live for his glory out of thanks for what he’s done.

If you make that choice today please let me know.  Email me at mark@reasonsforhope315.com.

Is the Resurrection of Jesus a Real Historical Event? – Fact 5

Is the Resurrection of Jesus a Real Historical Event?

Easter is just a week away and today we wrap up with the fifth historical fact in what I could call my Case for the Resurrection of Jesus. We’ve been examining the evidence for the resurrection using the Minimal Facts Approach presented by Gary Habermas and Michael Licona.  This deals with the five minimal facts that are so well historically confirmed that they are accepted by nearly every scholar, even the skeptical ones.  Check out the four previous posts if you missed them.

4-5 resurrection investigate

Fact 5 : The Tomb was Empty

This fifth fact doesn’t have as wide an acceptance among scholars as the previous four but still an impressive majority of about 75% accept it.  What’s more there is strong evidence for it.  Let’s look at that evidence.

The Jerusalem Factor

tombJesus was publicly executed in Jerusalem.   Then his after death appearances and empty tomb were first proclaimed publicly in Jerusalem.  That being the case, it would have been impossible for Christianity to get off the ground in Jerusalem if the body had been in the tomb.  His enemies in the Jewish leadership and Roman government would have only had to exhume the body and display it to bring an end to it all.  But not only are Jewish, Roman and all other writings missing any such account, there is total silence from Christianity’s critics who would have jumped at this sort of evidence.  Certainly the 2nd century critic Celsus would have mentioned it when writing against the resurrection but no such mention is made.

Some have said that by that time the body wouldn’t have been recognizable so they didn’t produce it.  However, it is reported that they began proclaiming it about 50 days after Jesus’ crucifixion and in the arid climate there, a corpse’s hair, stature, and distinctive wounds would still have been identifiable.  Besides that, regardless of the condition of the body, the enemies of Jesus would still have found benefit in producing the corpse.

Enemy Confirmation

Enemy confirmation is strong evidence and the empty tomb is not only reported by Christian sources but Jesus’ enemies confirmed it as well, even if indirectly.  Rather than produce a body, early critics accused Jesus’ disciples of stealing the body.  This is reported by Matthew, Justin Martyr and Tertullian.  There would have been no need to account for the missing body if it was still in the tomb.  This is the only early opposing theory that we know of that was offered by Jesus’ enemies.  So they indirectly confirmed that the tomb was empty.

You Wouldn’t Make That Up

If someone was making up a story to deceive others, we wouldn’t expect them to invent parts of the story that would hurt the credibility of their story.  This is the principle of embarrassing testimony.

Let’s consider one of the interesting details of the story of the empty tomb.  Who were the primary witnesses of the empty tomb? Some of the women followers of Jesus were.  Not only are women the first witnesses mentioned, they are mentioned in four gospels whereas male witnesses only appear later and only in two gospels.

So what?  This would be a very odd invention when you consider how the testimony of women was viewed in Jewish and Roman cultures at this time.  A woman’s testimony was considered questionable and certainly not as credible as a man’s testimony.

First century Jewish historian Josephus wrote, “But let not the testimony of women be admitted, on account of the levity and boldness of their sex, nor let servant be admitted to give testimony on account of the ignobility of their soul; since it is probable that they may not speak truth, either out of hope of gain, or fear of punishment.”

The Talmud said, “Any evidence which a woman [gives] is not valid (to offer), also they are not valid to offer.”

According to the statement in Rosh Hashannah, a woman’s testimony was given the same regard as that of a robber.

So given that view of the testimony of women at the time, it is highly unlikely that the gospel authors would invent the story and have women be the witnesses.  Imaging them saying, “Let’s make up this story that’s hard to believe in the first place, and let’s make some women, that most people won’t listen to, let’s make them the ones who witness and report it.”

This doesn’t sound like an invention.  Rather it sounds like the accurate reporting of the facts, even though those facts might not be the most helpful to them.

And so, for these three reasons, the empty tomb seems historically credible.

Former Oxford University church historian William Wand writes, “All the strictly historical evidence we have is in favor of [the empty tomb], and those scholars who reject it ought to recognize that they do so on some other ground than that of scientific history.”

Come back next week as we sum up the case for the resurrection and celebrate what that great, historically verifiable event can mean to your life and my life today.

Is the Resurrection of Jesus a Real Historical Event? – Fact 4

Is the Resurrection of Jesus a Real Historical Event?

Were any skeptics of Jesus won over by seeing him after his resurrection?  We’ll explore that as we continue to examine the evidence for the resurrection of Jesus, using the Minimal Facts Approach.  I’m presenting the five minimal facts that are so well historically confirmed that they are accepted by nearly every scholar, even the skeptical ones.  With the first two facts we saw that Jesus died by crucifixion and his disciples believed that he rose again and appeared to them.  The last three facts support the first two.  Last week we saw that the persecutor of the Church, Paul, was suddenly changed.  Now we move onto fact 4.

4-5 resurrection investigate

Fact 4 : The Skeptic James, the Brother of Jesus, was Suddenly Changed

The gospels report that Jesus had at least four brothers, or rather half-brothers, James, Joseph, Judas and Simon, plus unnamed sisters.  Josephus, the Jewish historian mentions, “the brother of Jesus who was called the Christ, whose name was James.”

So what did James think of Jesus during his life?  How do you think you would react if your brother started claiming he was God?

Before

We don’t have as much historical information on James as we do on Paul, but the gospels report that Jesus’ brothers, including James, were unbelievers during Jesus’ ministry.

Mark 3:21 says that his family “went to take charge of him, for they said, ‘He is out of his mind.’”

John 7:5 says, “For even his own brothers did not believe in him.”

So James was a skeptic of Jesus and his claims but then something happened that changed that.  What appears to be one of the earliest church creeds, found in 1 Corinthians 15 says, “that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve.  After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers and sisters at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James”

After

His appearance to his brother James is singled out.  That’s because it brought about a dramatic and sudden change in James.  After the risen Jesus appeared to him, James became a believer and became a leader of the church in Jerusalem.

Acts 15 identifies James as one of the leaders at the Jerusalem council.

Galatians 1:19 refers to “James, the  Lord’s brother” as an apostle.

And not only did James become a believer, he also became willing to suffer and even die as a martyr for his new belief in the risen Jesus, just as the other disciples did.  James’ suffering and martyrdom for his faith in the risen Jesus is reported by multiple sources: Josephus, Hegesippus, and Clement of Alexandria (we no longer have these writings by Hegesippus and Clement, but the church historian Eusebius quotes them).  This means we have both Christian and non-Christian sources for this.

Why?

So what explains such a dramatic change for James, that he went from not believing in his brother at all to becoming a leader in the new Christian church and, what’s more, becoming willing to give his life for his belief?  What could explain this if not,  as is reported, that Jesus appeared to his brother after he died and rose again?  Then you just might believe your brother is God, right?

Is the Resurrection of Jesus a Real Historical Event?

Did only people who were friendly to Jesus claim to have seen him after his resurrection?  The last few weeks we’ve been examining the evidence for the resurrection of Jesus, using the Minimal Facts Approach.  I’m presenting the five minimal facts that are so well historically confirmed that they are accepted by nearly every scholar, even the skeptical ones.  Two weeks ago we looked at the first fact, Jesus died by crucifixion.  Last week built upon that with the second fact, Jesus’ disciples believed that he rose and appeared to them.  The last three facts support the first two.

Fact 3 : The Church Persecutor Paul was Suddenly Changed

Saul of Tarsus, better known to most of us as the Apostle Paul, was a devout Jew who believed it was God’s will for him to persecute and imprison member of the new Christian church.  He was going about doing that when he suddenly changed and became one of the church’s most influential messengers and leaders.

In his letters to three different churches Paul writes of his change from persecutor of the church to promoter. The story of his conversion is also recorded in the book of Acts.  It also seems that the story of his dramatic change was going around the region of Judea within three years of his conversion.  Paul hinted at this in writing to the Galatians that though they did not know him by sight, they had heard the report that “The man who formerly persecuted us is now preaching the faith he once tried to destroy.” (Galatians 1:23)  So multiple sources report his sudden change but what could bring this radical change about?

Why?

Both Paul himself and Luke, in Acts, report that it was because Paul firmly believed that he had experienced an encounter with the risen Jesus. (Acts 9:1-19; 22:3-21; 26:9-23; 1 Corinthians 9:1; 15:8)  Paul’s conversion is so interesting because he was an enemy of Jesus and the church when he claimed that he saw the risen Jesus appear to him!  And so the resurrection of Jesus is testified to by both his friends and an enemy.  We saw in the introduction to this series of posts that confirmation by an enemy strongly supports historical claims.

What’s more, we must realize that Paul’s sudden change came at a great cost.  Someone might say, “People do change their minds and positions sometimes, what’s the big deal?”  However this wasn’t like Rush Limbaugh suddenly supporting a Democrat candidate for President, as shocking as that would be.  Remember what Paul was doing when he was converted.  He was persecuting the church.  He was imprisoning Christians under the authority of the Jewish leaders and he had been there at the stoning of the first Christian martyr, Stephen.  Luke reports that Paul was, “still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord’s disciples.” (Acts 9:1)

As shocking as it would be for Rush to support a Democrat, he wouldn’t be persecuted, imprisoned or possibly killed for it.  Paul was so convinced that he had seen Jesus, risen from the dead, that he chose to go from being an authorized and empowered persecutor to being one of the persecuted!  Paul began preaching about the risen Jesus even though that meant that he would suffer greatly for it and it would end in his martyrdom.  This is well documented by Paul himself, Luke, Clement of Rome, Polycarp, Tertullian, Dionysius of Corinth and Origen.

Friend and Foe Alike

So not only did Jesus’ friends and followers so firmly believe that the risen Jesus appeared to them that they were willing to suffer for their testimony, so too was Paul, the once great enemy of the church.

As we continue to add these five minimal facts I think you can see that they build a very strong case.  Any alternate theory has to account for not just one, but all five facts.  For example, one could say that the disciples stole Jesus’ body and lied about the resurrection, as the Jewish leaders did.  However (aside from the fact that that seems unlikely given the disciple’s willingness to suffer and die for their claims) how does that explain how an enemy of the church came to claim he had seen the risen Jesus and went from persecutor to persecuted?  And it will become even more difficult for any other theory to explain all the facts once we add the final two.

Come back next week for Fact 4: The skeptic James, the brother of Jesus, was suddenly changed.

Is the Resurrection of Jesus a Real Historical Event?

Two weeks ago I laid the groundwork for examining the evidence for the resurrection of Jesus and  now I’m presenting the five minimal facts that are so well historically confirmed that they are accepted by nearly every scholar, even the skeptical ones.  Last week we looked at the first fact, Jesus died by crucifixion.  This week we build upon that with the second fact.

Fact 2 : Jesus’ Disciples Believed that He Rose and Appeared to Them

appearanceThere is a virtual consensus among scholars who study the resurrection that after Jesus died by crucifixion, his disciples really believed that he rose from the dead and appeared to them.  This is because the evidence shows that 1) the disciples themselves claimed that Jesus had risen and appeared to them, and 2) after they said that they saw the risen Jesus, they were radically transformed from fearful cowards who denied and abandoned Jesus at his arrest and went into hiding — to bold and brave men who proclaimed the good news of the risen Jesus in spite of the imprisonment, torture and death that that brought.

Let’s look at the evidence for each of these point.

1) They claimed it

What if someone says, “I don’t believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God and I’m not sure the four gospels were written by the alleged authors.”?  Some say that the resurrection and Jesus’ miracles are legends that were added much later.  So how do we trace these claims back to the disciples themselves?  There are nine early, independent sources, in three categories, that show that Jesus’ disciples themselves claimed to have seen the risen Jesus.

First, Paul confirmed that the disciples made this claim. Paul wasn’t with the twelve disciples when Jesus was here.  He joined the church later, after persecuting it, but he got to know the original disciples personally (this is confirmed by sources both inside and outside of the Bible) and he confirms that they proclaimed that Jesus appeared to them 1 Cor 15:11.

Second, while I don’t have the space to go into the details, early oral tradition, that came before the writing of the New Testament, takes the proclamation of Jesus’ resurrection appearances back to within five years of the event and back to the disciples themselves.

Third, early church fathers, including Clement and Polycarp, who were students of the disciples themselves and knew them personally, confirm that they claimed and proclaimed the appearances of Jesus, risen from the dead.

2) They believed it

The disciples’ radical transformation into bold proclaimers and their willingness to suffer and even die for their claim shows that they believed it.  Sources outside the Bible, as well as those within, report the persecution, suffering and even martyrdom of the original disciples and Paul as well.

Clement, Polycarp, Ignatius Tertullian, Origen and others report the disciples’ willingness to suffer for their beliefs.  They report their suffering and martyrdom for their claims.  Origen wrote that the disciple’s devotion to the teachings of Jesus “was attended with danger to human life”.  Further, he said, “Jesus, who has both once risen himself and led his disciples to believe in his resurrection, and so thoroughly  persuaded them of it’s truth, that they show to all men by their sufferings how they are able to laugh at all the troubles of life, beholding the life eternal and the resurrection clearly demonstrated to them both in word and deed.”

The evidence is clear that the disciples believed that the risen Jesus appeared to them and they were willing to suffer and even lose their lives for those claims.  Atheistic New Testament scholar, Gerd Ludemann concluded, “It may be taken as historically certain that Peter and the disciples had experiences after Jesus’ death in which Jesus appeared to them as the risen Christ.”  This doesn’t mean that he believes that Jesus rose from the dead but it’s clear to him that the disciples believed it.

So What?

So they believed it, but don’t people die all the time for things they believe that aren’t true?  The 9-11 terrorists clearly believed in their cause and were willing to give their lives for their beliefs, but that doesn’t mean their beliefs were true.  So why is the disciples’ belief in the resurrection of Jesus such strong evidence that it actually occurred?

There is a significant difference between modern martyrs dying for their beliefs and Jesus’ disciples doing so.  Modern martyrs act on their trust in things that were taught to them by others.  The disciples, on the other hand, stood firm on their own eyewitness claims.  The disciples were in the position to know if their claims were true or a lie.  People die for a lie quite often but no one willingly dies for a lie that they know is a lie.

In a conspiracy someone always cracks to save their own skin.  And yet the disciples of Jesus were so certain that Jesus rose from the dead that every one of them continued to proclaim that, no matter what they were threatened with.  They never changed their story because the message of the Risen Savior meant more to them than their very lives.  I don’t know about you but I think that’s some testimony that’s worth listening to.

Come back next week for Fact 3:  The church persecutor Paul was suddenly changed.
